Editing SketchUp Materials

Sometimes I find I want to give the idea that the wood grain material Ive used in my SketchUp model has been stained, shellacked or varnished. there are some limited controls available under the Edit tab in the Materials browser. Often, though, it is nice to be able to use an external image editor such as Photo Shop. Fortunately this is very easy to do in SketchUp. Before you can actually do the editing in your external image editor, you have to tell SketchUp what editor you want to use and give it the path so it can find it. Go to Window>Preferences>Applications on the PC or SketchUp>Preferences>Applications on the Mac. Browse to find the program you want to use and choose it. In my example, I am using Paint.NET which is a freeware application that works quite well. You only need to make this setting once and it should be available any time you need it.

So to edit a material first get it into the In Model materials library. You can either apply the material to a face or faces in the model or you can simply right click on the material thumbnail and choose Add to model. In this example I painted all of the surfaces with this material. Then, in the In Model library, right click on the thumbnail and choose Edit Texture Image.

The image editor you selected in Preferences will now open with the material image ready for manipulation.

Make the desired changes to the color. If you use additional layers in the image editor remember to flatten the image before saving.

After youve made the desired changes to the image, save it. Once the image file has been saved, go back to SketchUp, youll notice the thumbnail image and any faces to which youve applied the material will show the change automatically.

Short, easy and sweet. Note that this doesnt modify the texture image in the original library. It only changes the one in the In Model linrary. If you wish to save the modified texture, open the secondary pane in the Materials browser. Set the lower pane to the destination library then click and drag the thumbnail from In Model to the other library.

Breakfast in bed tray or a laptop in bed tray

I got an email from Daniel Pozzobon in Brazil a while ago. He asked if I could build a small table on which he can use his notebook computer in bed. He says his town get very cold in the winter and he likes to stay in bed using his laptop. The problem is that it is not a good idea to use a laptop on the blankets; it can cause overheating.

Really this is just a breakfast-in-bed tray. Eating meals in bed is not something that has ever thrilled me, but the idea of a laptop tray is appealing. So maybe it should just be simply called a bed tray.

Martin Puryear

In creating spaces of mystery and spirituality, Martin
Puryear states, "The most interesting art for me retains a flickering quality, where opposed ideas can be held in tense coexistence." This dialogue of opposites is what I find so interesting in Puryears body of work.

In his recent thirty year retrospectives, first at MOMA in New York and recently at SFMOMA, one could walk among the large scale sculptures and observe this conversation between opposites.

In Puryears sculpture, he creates architectural spaces that beckon us to look inside.

In Sheeps Clothing

In his piece, "In Sheeps Clothing," there is an opening at the top. We want to get in but we cant. It is both the container and the contained. It is about the externality as well as the internality. The interior becomes part of the imagination, part of our desire.

In this photo from his exhibition, you can see how he uses form and plays it in opposition to line. He plays back and forth with texture, the ultimate smooth handwork to what feels like untreated bark. He moves from solid mass to open lath, light to dark, straight to curved, all the while it is minimal and simplistic.

Puryear, an African American, was born in 1947 in Washington, D.C. He joined the Peace Corps in 1967 and went to Sierra Leone, West Africa, to teach. Living near a small village on the edge of a huge forest, one can sense the impact of the cultural environment, the smell of wood burning, the vastness of the forest and the cultural ties to the use of wood. In his spare time he built guitars, boats and furniture with the people. The work was all done with handmade tools. (There was no electricity.) These life skills would be the tools for what he does.

His signature materials are mainly woods such as pine, cedar and Douglas fur (woods that wont overstate and take away from the visuals of the piece).

To know his work is to visually

recognize the forms he uses, both geometric and organic, old and new. We also recognize the "touch" of his gestures. He refers to the marks he creates by planning the wood as his "drawings."

As one comes in close, his handwork is made visible. Where the wood is joined it is not hidden but emphasized. The joinery is an integral part of what the piece is about. Dowels, stra

pping, fastening, gluing, stapling, is all made visible. Puryear invites us to view the points of attachments as part of the life of the piece and of the artist. Puryears use of the hand tool is evident. His marks lead us from the object or abstraction back to the artist and to ourselves.

Martin worked during the time of the Minimalist movement. He liked the idea of taking away, of getting down to the essence and simplifying the forms but he disagreed with their idea

of manufacturing the art and replicating. He departed from the idea of machine aesthetic. He was more interested in using his hands to do his craft. He was held as more of a neo-minimalist or modernist.

Puryear carries in his work a mystique, a quietude and sense of "otherness."

I am inspired by the scale of Puryears work, his use of pushing and pulling of opposing ideas and of the confidence and freedom he has in going toward the imaginative "other."

A table saw sled is one of the most useful jigs to have in your shop.

Over the past couple of years I have had a number of people ask me to make a video showing how to make a sled. Youve probably seen me use mine many times.

I decided to make a new sled to address some of the problems I have experienced with my old one. The main problem with my old sled is that it is just too big for my table saw. Its got a whopping two feet of space in its bed and is too heavy. I made the mistake of using half inch plywood for its base, causing a little bit of flexing. Three-quarter ply will be much more stable. Almost every time I use the sled, I need to also use a stop block. It has always been a pain to find a chunk of wood and clamp it to the fence, so my new sled features a built-in, sliding stop block.

I will still use my old table saw sled from time to time, but this smaller, streamlined version will rule.

Spring Summer Mantel Ledge

Hey friends! Yep, Im late to the Spring Mantel party, but better late than never, right? I decided to decorate our ledge for both Spring and Summer because, lets face it, I dont have time to do it again in a month. So here it is....

My starting off point was this amazing green colored soda crate that hubby brought home not long ago and I just went crazy for the color! That crate kinda inspired the rest of the look, with my main color theme being green and white.

I always try to research the things that my hubby brings home, however, I couldnt find much on this crate, or what K.C. Love is. If anyone knows what it is, do share! I kinda went with a picnic theme, too, and brought out a couple of picnic baskets from my picnic basket collection. I love them as much as I love ironstone and bread boards. They just make me happy and remind me of fun things I get to do with my hubby and kids, past and present. :)

I picked up this adorable metal green picnic basket not long ago. I went nuts for the wood handles combined with the green metal. Ive never been a fan of the all metal variety but this one, with the lovely wood handles, was calling my name. Love it!

For my main piece of art, I decided to make a sign with this wood/metal thing-a-ma-jig hubby found during Christmas. We dont know what it is. It started out like this....

But I decided to give it a new look by sanding it down and stenciling some of our favorite things about summer on it with a vintage set of stencils, also from hubby. So, now it looks like this...

Everything else, I already had around the house. I pulled out my favorite ironstone pitchers to display because I love the crisp white color and to add a little farmhouse vibe. The basket vases of faux greenery, I picked up at a yard sale last year. I gave them height by placing them on alternating maple and walnut wood scraps that I already had and just cut into squares.

I made the jar candle lanterns with some old jars I had and wire from the hardware store. I filled them with fragrant lavender and little tea lights. Rather than hang them on the hooks on our ledge, I hung them above. I just thought they looked better there. Im hoping to find a summery vintage bag to hang from those lower hooks soon.

Im totally happy about this Spring/Summer look! Im loving the green inspired by that wonderful crate! And because its finally Spring!
